What is shockwave therapy?
Shockwave therapy is becoming a popular treatment option for pain relief and mobility restoration. It is
a non-surgical and non-invasive modality utilized for many conditions. Shockwave is an acoustic wave
which carries high energy to painful spots and myoskeletal tissues. Often times, people believe
shockwave is used to disintegrate tissues, however that is not true. The acoustic waves cause a
microscopic interstitial and extracellular biological effects to promote regeneration and reparative
processes of the bones, tendons and other soft tissues.
Shockwave therapy can help the following but not limited to:
●Plantar Fasciitis and/or heel spurs
●Bursitis
●Shoulder pain (impingement, calcific tendinitis, frozen shoulder)
●Elbow pain (tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow)
●Patellar tendinitis (jumper’s knee)
●Medial tibial stress syndrome (Shin splints)
●Calcifications
●Chronic tendinopathies
How many treatments will I need?
The number of treatments can vary between each patient. It depends on the area we are working on
and the tissue response to shockwave. Often, patients do report relief after one treatment, however the
shockwave effect is cumulative so usually we recommend a minimum of three to five treatments.
How often will I need shockwave?
The frequency depends on the patient’s tolerance, condition being treated and the tissue response to
treatment. Usually it ranges from three to ten days apart.
